About the Sustainable Oakland Green Team

The Sustainable Oakland Green Team is dedicated to supporting the creation of a more environmentally sustainable community and improving the quality of life in Oakland, NJ. Its mission is simple but powerful: to help the community understand its environmental assets and resources — and to act to protect and enhance them. The team's work has earned Oakland recognition through the statewide Sustainable Jersey program, where the borough holds Silver certification, and the team itself was honored as a 2021 Sustainability Hero.

Made up of dedicated resident volunteers, the Green Team runs a wide range of local initiatives: the Oakland Community Garden, the annual Native Plant Sale, the Oakland Seed Bank, the Buy Fresh Buy Local program, recycling efforts (including plastic film recycling), Community Solar, a Community Energy Plan, a Green Building Policy, and environmental scholarships for students. The team meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 7:00 PM at the Oakland Senior Center, and meetings are open to the public.

It's exactly the kind of grassroots, neighbor-powered effort that makes a town a better place to live — which is why we wanted to feature them.
