About Ponds Reformed Church

Few institutions anywhere can trace their roots as far back as Ponds Reformed Church, which has served the Oakland community in the name of Christ since 1710 — more than three centuries. It is part of the Reformed Church in America, a fellowship of nearly 1,000 local churches in the U.S. and Canada that holds the distinction of being the oldest Protestant denomination in North America with a continuing ministry, tracing back to the Dutch settlers of "New Amsterdam" in 1628.

Today, Ponds describes itself as "a genuine, open and affirming community" — welcoming people of every background, ethnicity, age, ability, and identity, with a Christ-like love. Beyond Sunday worship at 10:00 AM, the church lives out that mission through service: youth programs that help young people grow in faith and friendship, a food pantry and assistance for neighbors in need, interfaith gatherings, and a range of community resources. Three hundred years on, it remains a place of faith, belonging, and service in the heart of Oakland.

It's exactly the kind of historic, community-minded institution that gives a town its character and its heart — which is why we wanted to feature them.
