What Is an MCNE?

Master Certified Negotiation Expert

Real estate comes down to negotiation more often than people realize. The MCNE is advanced training in how to do it well — and it's the designation Chopper flew across the country to earn.

The part we're proud of

Chopper was New Jersey's first
Master Certified Negotiation Expert.

Over a dozen years ago, he flew to Seattle to earn it — because at the time, that's what it took. Nobody in the state had done it yet.

Why Negotiation Is the Whole Game

Ask most people what a real estate agent does and they'll describe showing houses. But the moments that actually decide how a transaction turns out — what you pay, what you net, who fixes the roof, whether the deal survives a bad inspection — those are negotiations. Every one of them.

The MCNE — Master Certified Negotiation Expert — is advanced training in exactly that. It's one of Chopper's favorites of the two dozen designations he holds, and it's not hard to see why: it's the one that touches every single deal.

A Seattle Flight and a First

Over a dozen years ago, Chopper flew to Seattle to earn the MCNE. Not because he wanted the trip — because that's where the training was, and nobody in New Jersey had done it yet. He came back as the first Master Certified Negotiation Expert in the state.

Since then it's become a family thing. His brother Geno Russo earned it too — making them the first brothers in New Jersey to both hold the MCNE. Patrick followed. Today it runs through the team.

That last part matters more than the trivia. A designation held by one person on a team is a nice line on a bio. A designation held across a team means the training is actually how the team operates — whoever you're working with, you're getting the same approach.

What the Training Actually Covers

In Chopper's words — what an MCNE brings to your side of the table.

Crafted Tactics

Negotiation approaches built deliberately rather than improvised in the moment.

Tailored Strategy

Every transaction is unique. The approach gets built for the specific deal, not pulled off a shelf.

Complex Situations

Multiple offers, difficult counterparties, deals that get complicated — that's where the training earns its keep.

Working Toward Terms

Not just price. Timelines, contingencies, repairs, credits — the terms that shape whether a deal actually works for you.

Where It Shows Up

Negotiation isn't a single moment at the beginning. It runs the length of a transaction:

  • The offer — and whether yours stands out in a crowded field.
  • Attorney review — where terms get reworked. See how New Jersey handles it.
  • After the inspection — when a report turns up something and the deal has to be renegotiated.
  • The appraisal — if it comes in under contract price, someone has to solve that.
  • The walkthrough — when something isn't as promised days before closing.

Any one of those can end a transaction. Handling them well is a skill, and it's a learnable one — which is the entire premise of the MCNE.

Whether you're buying or selling, that's what we bring to the table. If you've got questions about how we'd approach your situation, that's a conversation worth having.

MCNE FAQs

What does MCNE stand for?
MCNE stands for Master Certified Negotiation Expert. It's an advanced designation focused specifically on negotiation skills and strategy in real estate transactions — how offers get structured, how complex situations get resolved, and how terms get worked out on a client's behalf.
Who was New Jersey's first MCNE?
Chopper Russo. He flew to Seattle over a dozen years ago to complete the training, becoming the first Master Certified Negotiation Expert in New Jersey. His brother Geno Russo later earned it as well, making them the first brothers in the state to both hold the designation.
Why does negotiation training matter when buying or selling a home?
Because the moments that determine how a transaction turns out are negotiations — the offer, attorney review, what happens after an inspection turns something up, an appraisal that comes in low, an issue found at the final walkthrough. Any of those can end a deal or reshape its terms. Handling them is a skill, and the MCNE is training in that skill.
Does the whole Chopper Russo Team hold the MCNE?
Yes. What started with Chopper became a team-wide standard. That matters more than a single credential on one bio — it means the negotiation approach is how the team actually operates, so you're getting the same training whoever you work with.
